If you have a lot of old black and white photos look on the bright side. These are pigment-based inks. Color photos are usually Dye and these do not last both as a basis of pigment.
There are steps you can take to keep your photos in the best condition possible. If you are ordering and they are stored in various locations throughout your house to buy a box for storage. Size of a shoebox is ideal. Try a pen to make sure it is acid and lignin. To be sure that you could buy a box of photos of them in a photo shop. Cut the cardboard separators same size as the width of the box. You may want to organize them in chronological order.
Prevent breakage and bending your old photos, ensuring that not overstuffed box. Do not tear or bend as this will break the emulsion surface.
Do not cut the old photos. Scan and make copies and then you can cut your heart's content. Keep the originals intact, however. Also make sure that no old photos are facing each other as this can make that stick, because the emulsion on its surface .. If possible, place the paper file between them.
